- Previously, DRACOON officially supported Internet Explorer 11 as a browser for the DRACOON Web App.
- Support for Internet Explorer 11 for the DRACOON Web App on the DRACOON cloud ended on July 1, 2020.
- Since then, Internet Explorer 11 could still be used temporarily.
- On August 11, 2020, the new version 5.8 of the DRACOON Web App has been installed on the DRACOON cloud, which is no longer compatible with Internet Explorer 11. It is now required to use a different browser for the DRACOON Web App on the DRACOON cloud.
- For the previous DRACOON Web App (available currently for on-premises users), support for Internet Explorer 11 will end with the next DRACOON release, scheduled for January 2021.
What does that mean?
In the future, we will only support modern browsers like Google Chrome, the new Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari for the DRACOON Web App. If the DRACOON Web App had display issues or functional problems solely under Internet Explorer after July 1, we no longer provided updates and problem solutions. Starting August 11, 2020, Internet Explorer can no longer be used for the DRACOON Web App of the DRACOON cloud.
Why is Internet Explorer no longer supported?
Internet Explorer is being phased out by Microsoft, and Microsoft urges users to switch to a different, more modern browser. In fact, Microsoft has ceased the development of new features for Internet Explorer as early as 2015—since then, Internet Explorer has been getting only security updates, and Microsoft only supplies Internet Explorer as a fallback browser in Windows 10.
Since 2015, web technologies have made enormous progress in all other browsers. However, many of these new technologies cannot be used when developing new web applications like the DRACOON Web App as long as the technically outdated Internet Explorer must still be supported. The additional work required for developing special solutions for Internet Explorer (so-called polyfills) is enormous.
Since Microsoft officially released a powerful successor to Internet Explorer on January 15, 2020—the new Edge browser, which is based on Chromium—and has also made it available for all supported Windows versions (even for Windows 7), there is no reason to use Internet Explorer any longer.
Am I affected by this?
If your users are using Internet Explorer to use the DRACOON Web App, they will be affected by this discontinuation.
What do I have to do?
- If applicable, inform your users that Internet Explorer should no longer be used for DRACOON after July 2020. Otherwise, they might experience problems when using the DRACOON Web App. Beginning in July 2020, Internet Explorer users saw a daily warning message when opening the DRACOON Web App to inform them that Internet Explorer is no longer supported by DRACOON.
- If your users are still using Internet Explorer for the DRACOON Web App on the DRACOON cloud, prepare them for the fact that it will no longer be possible starting August 11, 2020. Instead, a message is now displayed that a different browser must be used.
- If you are managing an IT environment, we recommend that you switch to a default browser other than Internet Explorer.
- If you do not want to use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft's new Chromium-based Edge browser can be highly recommended.
The new Edge browser can be pre-configured through group policies the same rich way as Internet Explorer. If you still use web applications or intranet sites that require legacy browser technologies such as Java, Flash, or ActiveX (which were only supported by Internet Explorer lately), the new Microsoft Edge browser offers a compatibility solution targeted to business users: By using group policies, you can preset which specific websites should be displayed in the new Edge browser in a special Internet Explorer mode. When the user opens any of those websites in the new Edge, they will be automatically displayed in an Internet Explorer browser window embedded in Edge—without the users even being aware of this or having to control it themselves.
